Description
The Clients met with MortonScarr to discuss replacing an existing dated extension to their house with a new larger version, along with a full reconfiguration and refurbishment of the internal spaces.
The site borders a conservation area and enjoys a long, expansive garden; part of the brief was to reconnect the house to the plentiful outdoor space. Another factor of the brief was to bring back a sense of cohesion to the internal layout; the existing spaces felt disjointed, a symptom of the house being extended in a piecemeal fashion over its lifetime.
The extension utilises an internal courtyard to ensure that deep in the house received plenty of natural light whilst extending its footprint. The courtyard also provides a sight line from the main house, through the courtyard, through the extension, to the garden beyond; the glazing mullions align to direct and frame the view.
The extension is clad in Canadian western red cedar to match the existing pool house. The roof is dark metal and is pitched asymmetrically as a response to the bordering conservation area.
The first floor now provides a large master suite with a private dressing room and en-suite with views down to the courtyard and across to the garden. The second floor is divided into two bedrooms that share an en-suite with a new dormer extension; an exact match of an existing dormer in the neighbouring room.
The construction finished in June 2019.
