Description
This plot of land is sandwiched between the rear gardens of two rows of houses in the centre of a Sussex village. The site is accessed via a small track which currently serves garages and rear gardens.
The key challenges for the design were ensuring that the proposals did not impact the neighbouring properties and also that the site could be accessed by emergency and refuse vehicles down the already narrow access road. Proposals have been created for a development which has been supported by the Planning Department so that it is not too dense and does not impact the rear gardens of the existing houses
The scheme proposes three houses that are joined and stepped in plan across site. Pronounced chimney designs and roof pitches have been used to match the Victorian houses nearby. Traditional local materials have also been used, but in a contemporary style, with timber cladding and timber louvers, textured brick and dark metal for windows and roofs. The stepped design of the units allows for stepped windows and openings to be directed away from neighbour’s amenity spaces and prevent overlooking. Large glazed areas to rear allow for maximum light to be let in to the plan where the overlooking is not a problem. Large open plan living spaces have been created on the ground floors with four bedroom for each unit. The master suite spans across the whole of the top floor. Large rear gardens ensure that the houses have a sense of belonging within the village and private parking has been provided along with the secure cycle parking in the front area.
