Description
This property is a Grade II listed Italianate villa-style dwelling constructed in the mid-nineteenth century, located in a central Brighton conservation area. A prime example of the Regency period, the house is arranged over four floors, including a basement, ground and first floors, alongside rooms located within the roof space.
A key feature of the house is its grand central staircase with lantern rooflight, which features landings constructed in part from large slabs of black slate only 40mm thick.
MortonScarr undertook the refurbishment and re-organisation of the house, which included the relocation of the kitchen to the ground floor, design of a new family bathroom to the first floor with Thoms Crapper fittings, and the creation of a formal candle lit dining room within the basement alongside a less formal library space and wine store.
The ground floor kitchen features a Phillipe Stark-designed kitchen alongside the installation of a dumb waiter to transport food down to the dining room below. MortonScarr also design a naturally ventilated pantry to the kitchen, which took the form of a curved enclosure clad with liquid metal panels. In order to maintain the original features of the listed building, the pantry did not appear to touch the walls or ceiling, but instead was separated with bands of frameless glazing which enabled the period skirtings and cornices to continue uninterrupted.
New plumbing and electrics were installed throughout, with underfloor heating was installed throughout the house beneath reclaimed timber floorboards and a Portland limestone flagged floor.
